According to the READ Educational Trust, 29% of SA’s kids are illiterate. This is an alarming number that deserves our attention. We need more and more children to experience the magic of books. One of the authors that are making a huge contribution to ensure that children experience this magic in her work is Refiloe Moahloli. Refiloe is a talented storyteller with 8 published children’s books. She is an award-winning full-time writer who grew up in Mthatha in the Eastern Cape. “As Aunt to many nieces and nephews who consider her to be ‘one of them due to her modest height, life with them inspires a number of stories floating in her head at any given time” – Penguin Random House.
In October 2021, her book How Many Ways Can You Say Hello, won the overall prize for the SA Book Awards Book of the year 2021. Pan MacMillan announced in March 2021 that the World English publication rights to her book We Are One have been sold to Amazon Crossing Kids, a division of Amazon Publishing. This year alone, Refiloe published four books:
- How Many Ways Can You Say Goodbye
- We Are One
- Know My Name
- How the Elephants Saved Summer
We thank Refiloe for her contribution to South African children’s literature and we wish her the best as she continues to create content that is relevant to African children.
